Analytical solution of the μ(I)−rheology for fully developed granular flows in simple configurations

چکیده
Using the μ(I) continuum model recently proposed for dense granular flows, we study theoretically steady and fully granular flows in two configurations: a plane shear cell and a channel made of two parallel plates (Poiseuille configuration). In such a description, the granular medium behaves like a fluid whose viscosity is a function of the inertia. In the shear plane geometry our calculation predicts that the height of the shear bands scales with U 1/4

A simplified model for static/flowing dynamics in thin-layer flows of granular materials with yield
We introduce a simplified model for thin-layer flows of granular materials with yield. The model is based on a viscoplastic rheology with Drucker-Prager yield stress and describes the dynamics of the velocity profile as well as the transition between static and flowing material. As opposed to most models developed to describe the static/flowing transition in thin-layer flows, the variable Z in ...
متن کاملA depth-averaged μ(I)-rheology for shallow granular free-surface flows
The μ(I)-rheology is a nonlinear viscous law, with a strain-rate invariant and pressure-dependent viscosity, that has proved to be effective at modelling dry granular flows in the intermediate range of the inertial number, I. This paper shows how to incorporate the rheology into depth-averaged granular avalanche models. To leading order, the rheology generates an effective basal friction, which...
متن کاملDense granular flow rheology in turbulent bedload transport
The local granular rheology is investigated numerically in turbulent bedload transport. Considering spherical particles, steady uniform configurations are simulated using a coupled fluid-discrete-element model. The stress tensor is computed as a function of the depth for a series of simulations varying the Shields number, the specific density and the particle diameter. The results are analyzed ...
متن کاملNon-local rheology in dense granular flows: Revisiting the concept of fluidity.
The aim of this article is to discuss the concepts of non-local rheology and fluidity, recently introduced to describe dense granular flows. We review and compare various approaches based on different constitutive relations and choices for the fluidity parameter, focusing on the kinetic elasto-plastic model introduced by Bocquet et al. (Phys. Rev. Lett 103, 036001 (2009)) for soft matter, and a...
متن کاملA Free Interface Model for Static/Flowing Dynamics in Thin-Layer Flows of Granular Materials with Yield: Simple Shear Simulations and Comparison with Experiments
Flows of dense granular materials comprise regions where the material is flowing, and regions where it is static. Describing the dynamics of the interface between these two regions is a key issue to understanding the erosion and deposition processes in natural environments. A free interface simplified model for non-averaged thin-layer flows of granular materials has been previously proposed by ...
